About the Role

Martian Code is proud to partner with one of Australia’s most respected engineering consultancies to recruit a General Manager – Design Engineering & Project Management. This leadership role will play a critical part in delivering high-quality infrastructure design work while managing and mentoring a team of 15 professionals across multiple locations.

Based primarily in the Sydney CBD office, this hybrid role requires presence in Wollongong and Nowra one day per week. You’ll report into the executive leadership team and bring together technical excellence, project delivery oversight, and team empowerment.

What You’ll Do

You’ll lead the charge on design engineering and project management for high-impact infrastructure projects across transport, water, and energy sectors. Your ability to blend technical expertise with strong interpersonal leadership will define success in this role.

Team & Project Leadership

• Manage, lead, and support a team of 15 civil engineers, drafters, and project managers
• Provide strategic oversight for ongoing and upcoming projects
• Ensure quality assurance across all deliverables and mentor technical staff
• Foster a high-performance culture that values accountability and continuous improvement

Design & Technical Oversight

• Review and guide civil design work, including layouts, drawings, and engineering documentation
• Provide technical input on complex civil design challenges
• Champion best practices in design standards, documentation, and client communication

Stakeholder Engagement

• Collaborate with executive leadership and senior project stakeholders
• Represent the business in meetings with clients, partners, and internal cross-functional teams
• Support business development efforts with technical scoping and capability presentations

You’ll Bring

• 15+ years’ experience in civil engineering or civil design, ideally in infrastructure projects
• You are a Civil Engineer
• Have some experience in business development
• You are an SME
• Proven leadership experience managing engineering and project delivery teams
• Strong working knowledge of BIM and infrastructure design software
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and inspire others
• Comfortable working across Sydney, Wollongong, and Nowra (1 day/week in regional office)

Subject Matter Expertise (SME) Expectations

As the General Manager of Design Engineering and Project Management, you are expected to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in civil and structural design and multidisciplinary project delivery across the roads, rail, water, and energy sectors. This role combines strategic leadership with deep technical credibility to ensure projects are delivered to the highest standard.

Your SME responsibilities will include:

✅ Sector-Focused Technical Oversight: Provide expert guidance on the design and delivery of major infrastructure projects in roads, rail, water, and energy. Ensure all designs meet or exceed compliance standards, client expectations, and industry benchmarks.

✅ Multidisciplinary Project Delivery Expertise: Lead end-to-end project delivery — from feasibility through to construction and commissioning. Leverage your experience in complex, multi-stakeholder environments to manage risk and ensure constructability and coordination across disciplines.

✅ Client & Stakeholder Confidence: Represent the consultancy as a trusted advisor. Communicate complex technical issues clearly and provide innovative, value-engineered solutions that support commercial outcomes for clients across government and private sectors.

✅ Team Mentorship & Development: Uplift capability across engineering and project management teams. Set the technical standard, provide coaching and development pathways, and foster a high-performance culture aligned with our sector specialisation.

✅ Compliance & Innovation Leadership: Maintain fluency in Australian and international design codes (AS/NZS, Austroads, RMS, Eurocodes, etc.) and lead the implementation of cutting-edge tools, modelling techniques, and digital delivery platforms that drive design efficiency and quality.

The ideal candidate will be recognised as a technical authority in infrastructure, with the confidence to lead design excellence across core sectors and the credibility to influence at the highest levels — both internally and externally.
